🕌 The Shariah question, answered honestly

Is State Life insurance halal?

The honest answer in one line: scholars differ on conventional insurance — so State Life built a separate, SECP-licensed Takaful window. Here is how it works and which plans are on it.

We will not pretend the debate away. Many scholars hold conventional life insurance impermissible because of interest (riba) and contractual uncertainty (gharar); others permit it on the basis of need. That genuine difference of opinion is exactly why Takaful exists — and why State Life, Pakistan's state-owned insurer, obtained an SECP licence to run one. If Shariah compliance matters to you, you do not have to compromise: you choose from the Tayyab plans, and we advise on that track from the very first conversation.

The Tayyab window

What makes Tayyab Takaful different

🤝 A Waqf pool, not a premium

Contributions go into a participants' common fund under Waqf rules. Claims are paid from the pool; protection comes from mutual cooperation, not from an interest-bearing contract.

📈 Surplus sharing, not interest

If the pool ends the year in surplus after claims, that surplus is distributed among participants proportionately — the Takaful replacement for profit, alongside Shariah-compliant investment of the funds.

🎓 Supervised and licensed

The window is licensed by the SECP and supervised by State Life's Shariah Advisor, Mufti Muhammad Hassaan Kaleem (Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi). The Waqf rules and Shariah documentation are available — ask us and we share them.

Halal, haram and the fatwa question

Asked constantly, answered honestly

Is State Life insurance halal or haram?

Conventional life insurance is genuinely debated: many scholars consider it impermissible because of interest and uncertainty in the contract, while others allow it for need. State Life's answer to the concern is structural — a separate, SECP-licensed Window Takaful Operation ("Tayyab") whose plans are built on Waqf pooling and surplus sharing, supervised by a Shariah Advisor. If compliance matters to you, choose from the Takaful plans and ask us for the Shariah documentation.

Who supervises State Life's Takaful for Shariah compliance?

State Life's Window Takaful Operations are supervised by its Shariah Advisor, Mufti Muhammad Hassaan Kaleem — a graduate of Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi with a long career in Islamic finance. The window itself is licensed by the SECP, Pakistan's insurance regulator.

How is Takaful different from insurance?

In Takaful, participants' contributions pool into a common fund under Waqf rules; the fund pays claims, and any year-end surplus is distributed among participants proportionately. There is no interest-bearing promise — protection comes from mutual pooling, and growth from Shariah-compliant investment of the fund.

Are the Takaful plans' benefits guaranteed by the government too?

The Takaful plans operate under State Life — the state-owned, AAA-rated insurer whose policyholder liabilities carry a Government of Pakistan guarantee. The savings side of the unit-linked Takaful plans reflects fund performance, which is why we never quote fixed maturity figures for them.

Which Takaful plans can I choose from?

Five individual plans under the Tayyab brand: the Takaful Savings Plan, Takaful Endowment, Takaful Golden Endowment (pay 7, covered 20), Takaful Platinum Plus (pay 3, covered 10, double face value on death) and the Takaful Child Education & Marriage Plan.
