⚖️ Honest comparison

State Life plan vs National Savings — different jobs, honestly compared

This is the comparison Pakistani savers actually face: the bank branch sells neither, the family suggests both. And it is the one comparison where "which pays more?" is the wrong first question.

The short answer: Many sensible families hold both: National Savings for accessible reserves, a State Life plan for the goal that must be met no matter what. If you can only do one, decide by whether your family needs the goal protected — that is the thing only the insurance plan does.

Fact by fact

State Life plan vs National Savings, side by side

Both carry government backing. What differs is the job: National Savings pays an announced profit rate on money you have; a State Life plan guarantees a goal amount for your family whether or not you live to finish saving it.

The verdict

Which one fits you?

The State Life plan wins when…

  • The goal must survive you — cover from day one is the whole point.
  • You need the discipline of a premium, not a promise to yourself.
  • Your horizon is 10+ years, where the highest bonus bands apply.

National Savings wins when…

  • You already have the lump sum and want announced, predictable profit.
  • You may need the money back on shorter notice.

Many sensible families hold both: National Savings for accessible reserves, a State Life plan for the goal that must be met no matter what. If you can only do one, decide by whether your family needs the goal protected — that is the thing only the insurance plan does.

The questions behind this comparison

Which gives a higher return — State Life or National Savings?

They are not measured the same way. National Savings announces its profit rates upfront; a State Life plan's outcome is the sum assured plus bonuses declared over the years, and part of what you pay buys life cover. Ask us for a side-by-side illustration for your amount and term — we prepare it free and show both columns honestly.

Are both really government-backed?

Yes. National Savings schemes are sovereign instruments, and State Life's policyholder benefits carry a Government of Pakistan guarantee. On backing they are peers; on function they are different tools.

What happens to each if I die?

The defining difference. National Savings pays your heirs whatever you had saved. A State Life plan pays the full sum assured plus accrued bonuses — even if you had paid only one year's premiums.

Can I put my monthly savings into National Savings instead of a plan?

You can, and for pure accumulation with liquidity it is a fine choice. You lose the two things the plan adds: automatic discipline and the guaranteed goal amount for your family.

Is there a Shariah-compliant version of each?

State Life offers the Tayyab Takaful plans. National Savings has introduced some Shariah-compliant instruments; availability varies by scheme — check CDNS for current offerings.
